Cultural Uniqueness of the Trunyan Kintamani Village

Trunyan Village in Kintamani District, Bali

Trunyan Village in Kintamani District, Bali, is famous for its funeral process which is considered quite unique. The unique thing is, a deceased human body is not buried or cremated as it should, but is left open and just rot.

The body will be placed in the Seme Wayah cemetery. To be able to reach Seme Wayah can only be reached by crossing Lake Batur.

There, visitors will see a lot of bones lined up, scattered money, to other items that will be left with the body.

Some bodies will be laid in a bamboo cage to avoid wild animals.

When all the cages are full, the oldest corpse will be removed to make room for the new corpse by placing it on a pile.

When the body has been destroyed by the heat of the sun, the bones will be placed on an altar under the holy tree.

The most interesting thing is that although it is left open, there is no pungent odor arising from the body of the body. How come there's no smell? this is because of a large and tall tree called taru menyan. It is the taru tree that neutralizes the odor from the body's decay.

In this village, there are three separate burial sites namely, Seme Faces intended for those who died naturally, then Seme Denies for those who died unnaturally or due to an accident and Seme Muda that was designated for infants, young children, and those who single.

Only men are allowed to go there and deliver the bodies after the preparatory rituals are carried out - including cleaning the bodies in rain water and wrapping them in cloth, but the head is not covered.

Trunyan Kintamani Village women are not allowed to visit burial sites. They believe that the village will be affected by an earthquake or volcanic eruption if women come to the cemetery.

In addition, those who have just visited the tomb may not go directly into the Pancering Jagat Temple and must go through the cleaning process first.
